Math facts by grade: what your child should master in K–5

Somewhere around the first parent-teacher conference, the question shows up: is my child where they're supposed to be with math? Not in general — in the specific, checkable way that lets you actually do something about it.
For the early elementary years, that question mostly comes down to math facts. The concepts build on each other in a predictable sequence, and the facts your child is expected to have automatic change grade by grade. Here's what that sequence looks like from kindergarten through fifth grade, and how to tell if your child is on track.
Why math facts come in a sequence
Math facts aren't a grab bag to memorize all at once. They build on each other in a deliberate order: addition before subtraction, facts within 10 before facts within 20, multiplication before division. Each layer assumes the one underneath it.
That's also why "on grade level" is a meaningful phrase here. A second grader still finger-counting 5 + 3 isn't behind on concepts — they're behind on the specific facts that grade expects them to own. Knowing which facts belong to which grade is the fastest way to figure out whether there's a real gap, and how big it is.
One caveat before the grade-by-grade breakdown: pacing varies a little between schools and curricula. Treat these as guideposts, not deadlines. If your child is a few weeks behind, that's normal. If a whole year's expectations never landed, that's worth addressing — and very fixable at home.
Kindergarten: the foundation facts
Kindergarten isn't about memorizing facts yet. It's about building the number sense that makes facts learnable later. By the end of the year, most kindergartners can:
- Count to 100 by ones and by tens.
- Recognize how many are in a small group at a glance (up to about 5) without counting one by one.
- Add and subtract within 5, often using fingers or objects, and fluently within 5 by year's end.
- Understand that numbers 11–19 are made of a ten and some ones.
If your kindergartner still counts on fingers for 2 + 3, that's developmentally normal. What matters is that they're comfortable combining and taking away small amounts — the automaticity comes next.
First grade: addition and subtraction within 20
First grade is where fact work gets real. This is the year kids meet most of the addition fact families and the matching subtraction facts. By the end of first grade, look for:
- Fluency with addition and subtraction within 10 — quick recall, not finger-counting.
- Solid strategies for facts within 20: doubles, doubles plus one, making ten, counting on.
- Understanding that the teen numbers are a ten and some ones (the foundation for regrouping later).
- Early comfort with the relationship between addition and subtraction (if 6 + 4 = 10, then 10 − 4 = 6).
The facts within 10 are the heart of the year. A first grader who ends the year knowing 6 + 4, 8 + 3, and 9 + 5 without hesitation is exactly on track.
Second grade: automatic within 20
Second grade is the milestone year for addition and subtraction. The expectation in most standards is that by the end of second grade, a child knows single-digit addition and subtraction facts from memory. That means:
- Recall of all addition facts within 20 — 8 + 7, 9 + 6, 13 − 5 — without counting.
- Fluency subtracting within 20, including the tricky teens minus 8 or 9.
- Fluency adding and subtracting within 100 using written strategies, which leans directly on those single-digit facts.
- The beginnings of place-value thinking with three-digit numbers.
This is also the grade where a fluency gap starts to cost real academic ground, because second-grade problem solving assumes the small facts are free. If homework is suddenly taking far longer than it should, the facts are a likely place to look.
Third grade: multiplication and division
Third grade is the heaviest fact year in elementary school. Multiplication and division facts arrive together, and the expectation is genuine automaticity by the end of the year:
- Fluency with multiplication facts through 10 × 10.
- Recall of single-digit multiplication products from memory by year's end.
- The matching division facts, understood as the inverse of multiplication.
- Continued fluency with addition and subtraction within 100 and beyond.
This is also the year gaps compound fastest. A child still rebuilding addition facts while learning multiplication is doing two jobs at once, and both suffer. If multiplication is the struggle, check whether the addition and subtraction facts underneath are actually automatic first.
Fourth grade: maintenance and bigger numbers
Fourth grade introduces fewer new facts, but it raises the stakes on the ones already learned. Multi-digit multiplication and long division are physically impossible to carry out if every single-digit product costs effort. On track looks like:
- All multiplication facts through 12 × 12 recalled quickly.
- Matching division facts available without hesitation.
- Comfort with factors and multiples, which is really fact knowledge wearing a new outfit.
- Multi-digit addition, subtraction, and beginning multiplication done accurately without fact-based stalling.
If fourth-grade homework is slow and frustrating, resist the urge to drill the long-division algorithm harder. The bottleneck is usually the facts underneath it.
Fifth grade: fluency as a tool
By fifth grade, no new facts are formally introduced — but the stakes are highest, because everything now assumes total automaticity:
- All four operations with single-digit facts, fully automatic.
- Fluency with multi-digit whole-number operations, including the standard algorithms.
- Adding and subtracting fractions, which hides a surprising amount of multiplication and division fact work in the least-common-denominator step.
- Early algebraic thinking, where slow facts eat the working memory that variables and patterns require.
A fifth grader who still pauses on 7 × 8 can usually cover the gap with effort — right up until pre-algebra, when the overhead starts swallowing whole problems. Catching it in fifth grade is far easier than in seventh.
Signs your child is behind at their grade level
Grade-level expectations give you a concrete way to check. The pattern to watch for isn't one hard homework night — it's a persistent style of working around the facts:
- Finger-counting for facts that should be automatic a full grade past when they were taught.
- Correct answers that take ten or more seconds to arrive.
- Math homework that consistently takes twice as long as the teacher's estimate.
- Growing avoidance of anything number-related, especially compared to reading.
- A child who can explain a concept but stalls the moment numbers get attached to it.
If you're seeing a pattern like this, the most useful next step isn't more worksheets — it's finding out exactly which facts are missing, so practice targets the gap instead of guessing.
How to catch up without battles
The encouraging part: fact gaps are one of the most fixable problems in elementary math. Kids catch up quickly when practice is short, ordered, and consistent. You don't need hours, and you don't need to become the math teacher.
- Start where your child actually is — usually one or two grade levels of facts behind where their math book is, which is completely normal.
- Work one small fact family at a time, in a deliberate order, so each set sets up the next.
- Keep sessions to about ten minutes a day. Consistency beats duration every time.
- Use paper, not an app — writing the answer builds the recall that tapping never does.
- End every session with a win. A page your child finishes is a page they'll come back to.
