How the Reti the Yeti system teaches math facts that stick

I built Reti the Yeti: Adventures in Sumtopia because I kept watching the same thing happen — capable kids stalling out on math not because the concepts were beyond them, but because the small facts underneath were still costing them effort.
Here's how the workbook is put together, and why each piece is there.
1. The story does the motivating
Reti is a yeti, Sumtopia is in trouble, and your child is the one helping fix it. That framing isn't decoration. It's the reason a kid opens the book on day nine without being asked.
Most fact practice relies on external pressure — a timer, a sticker chart, a parent standing nearby. Story-driven practice replaces that with curiosity about what happens next. The math still has to be done. It just stops being the reason to quit.
2. The facts come in a deliberate order
The book covers addition and subtraction through 10, taught systematically. Facts are grouped into families that share a structure, and each group builds on the ones before it:
- The zero facts, where the pattern is obvious and the win is immediate.
- The +1 and +2 facts, which connect to counting your child already owns.
- Doubles, which kids tend to latch onto and can then reason from.
- Making ten, the single most useful structure in early addition.
- Subtraction taught alongside its matching addition facts, not months later.
That ordering is what a random worksheet packet can't give you. Every page assumes what came before it and sets up what comes next.
3. Pages are short and winnable
Each page is built to be finished. That's a design constraint, not a convenience — a child who completes the page ends the session feeling competent, and competence is what brings them back tomorrow.
Short, winnable pages that end on a high note beat long pages that end in tears.
It also means ten minutes is a real number, not an optimistic one. You can fit it into a Tuesday that already went sideways.
4. No screens
Paper and pencil, on purpose. There's no login, no notifications, no app fighting your household's screen-time rules, and no animation between problems pulling your child's attention off the math.
Writing an answer also creates a small amount of productive friction. The child has to retrieve the fact and commit to it, which is exactly the mental action that builds recall.
5. Built by a teacher, tested on real kids
Every sequence in the book came out of classroom experience with elementary students, and the pages were tested with real kids before the book was finished. Where a page didn't hold attention or a sequence moved too fast, it got changed.
What a typical session looks like
- Your child reads the short story bit at the top of the page.
- They work the practice — usually one focused fact family.
- They finish, see the progress, and find out what Reti's up to next.
- You do nothing but be nearby. There's no prep and nothing to grade.
